Hungerford gave a debut to Swindon loanee keeper Redman Evans after Ryan Clarke picked up a knock in mid week but the debutant in Hungerford's goal had little to do.
Hungerford took the lead in the first 10 minutes when Louis McGrory converted a penalty past Basingstoke keeper Simon Grant. Jose Marquez had won the penalty being too quick for Basingstoke’s defender and getting clattered from behind.
After the opening goal the game was a battle on a soaking pitch which lacked any real quality. Kyle Tooze and Jose Marquez were bright up top for Hungerford. Tooze in particular putting two great ball across the six yard box but neither were picked up by a Hungerford attacking player.
Ten minutes into the second half Marquez should have doubled the home sides lead when a great cross by Curtis Angell fell to him but he somehow managed to scoop it over the bar.
As the game entered the last quarter Marquez fired a free kick that swerved around the wall and had to be tipped around the post by Grant. Hungerford the offensive side with Basingstoke seem to be out of ideas other than to pump balls towards Hungerford area which were easily dealt with the Hungerford defense marshalled by Jordan Rose
It took until the 74th minute for Hungerford to get the second goal. A Louis McGrory corner was headed in by Luke Softley which was enough to seal the game.
A last minute of injury time penalty for Basingstoke converted by James Clarke was little more than a consolation for the away team. Hungerford deserved the win and continue to look up the table where as the away side must be looking over their shoulders nervously.
