Jake Evans scored a second half wonder goal to give Hungerford Town a deserved victory over Dover Athletic and a crucial three points.
The Crusaders fought hard throughout the 90 minutes showing that grit and determination that will be needed in a relegation fight. The conditions were not ideal and a deluge of rain and hail hit Bulpit Lane the moment Evans struck the ball and scored the games only goal.
The first half was played at a frantic pace with Hungerford coming out the traps quickly and Dan Roberts had the ball in the net inside two minutes, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Luke Kandi was denied one on one by Jed Ward, a strong hand from the goalkeeper to keep out the shot. Jake Evans’ whipped in cross came agonisingly close to being turned home by Rollinson coming in at the back post. Myles Judd’s curling effort came close for Dover before Roberts had a good chance from a Ryan Jones long throw-in which was well blocked. Luke Baptiste had a clear sight on goal but shot straight at Ward.
Hungerford kept pushing for the opening goal in the second half but created few chances until Evans unleashed a stunning strike from distance that flew past Stuart Nelson. A poor and lacklustre second half from Dover meant they had nothing to offer in trying to find an equaliser. Their day was made worse in added time when Will Moses pulled Roberts back and received his second yellow of the game to receive his marching orders. Hungerford comfortably held out for the win.
